Ralph Bunche: An American Legend

To support the Queens Museum's touring exhibition Ralph Bunche: An American Legend, an exhibition that will examine the life of this Nobel Peace Prize winner who was noted for his efforts in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, and his work at the United Nations which centered around the decolonialization of Tanganyika, Togoland, British Cameroons, French Cameroons, French Togoland, Ruanda-Urundi, New Guinea and Western Samoa. Bunch won the Peace Prize for his leadership role in the peace negotiations between Arabs and Jews in Palestine from June 1947 to August of 1949. The museum will offer audiences an intellectual and interpersonal understanding of Bunche, the issues he addressed and the world in which he worked. This exhibition will deepen understanding of the historical issues of his time and will also show the continuing relevance of these issues today. The museum will employ a variety of interpretive strategies to illustrate the life and times of Ralph Bunche including: 1) an exhibition that includes contemporary art, timelines, large scale photographic images, video and sound, 2) public programs that include a film festival, audio tours, a program on conflict resolution and curriculum based programs for school aged children; and 3) partnership programs with the Schomburg Center in Harlem, the United Nations, Wayne State University and the University of California Library.
