New York Foundation for the Arts
To support the making of the film True Lies by the Guerilla News Network (GNN) and to support a research initiative that would lead to GNN's development of a media product that explores the work of Nathan Cummings Foundation's Health Program grantees. True Lies is a documentary film that examines how the media has ceased to be a public service and increasingly serves the interests of the corporations that own and control it. The film will help teach younger audiences how to detect media bias so that they may better understand the extent to which the true function of media--reporting what is going on around the world--has been subverted to sell the products that sustain it. GNN will speak to young people in a language they understand, the language of music videos. They will incorporate bold graphic design, animated sequences, MTV-style editing, and musical sound tracks by popular artists into a film that features prominent media analysts. GNN will disseminate the finished work by submitting it to national and international film festivals and public television stations here and abroad, formatting the work so that it can be shown in three segments and is appropriate for classroom use, making it available on-line, and distributing the product through educational media catalogues. GNN will begin the process of researching health policy issues, interviewing health policy makers and creating an on-line forum that will enable them to identify health issues that resonate with their community. This grant also satisfies: Arts and Culture Program: Objective II, Strategy 1 & 3Health Program: Objective I, Strategy 1 and Objective II, Strategy 1 & 2 Interprogram Initiatives for Social and Economic Justice: Objective I & II |
