General Support

For general support for a site on the internet titled, Community Arts Network (CAN), that promotes the growth and stability of the field of community-based arts. Art in the Public Interest (API) is a nonprofit organization providing information and resources in support of art that is culturally engaged and serving communities. The Community Arts Network has become a significant voice in the field of community-based art and is currently recognized as the primary source of the latest news and critical thinking in the field. Through its articles, CAN provides definition of the field, articles about the practice, theory and criticism. CAN encourages cross-fertilization among practitioners and provides venues for art makers and others working in communities to communicate. Last year, API used NCF support to document proceedings; publish 12 editions of API news on the Web site and send API news to 1,500 individuals by e-mail; increase the Reading Room inventory; increase Web site visits; increase registered users; plan a meeting of national field leaders to develop strategies for affecting national awareness of the field and develop policy; and to engage in a five-year planning process. In 2003-2004 CAN will continue to increase its offerings and build its constituency.
