Citizen King Documentary and Outreach Project

Program Contribution
Arts and Culture Program, $25,000
Interprogram Initiatives for Social and Economic Justice, $75,000

To support the Citizen King Documentary and Outreach Project. "Citizen King," will trace Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s struggle to recast himself by embracing causes beyond the Civil Rights movement. Roja Production's ninety-minute documentary "Citizen King," will air on PBS's American Experience on January 19th, 2004, on what would have been Dr. King's 75th birthday. King sought to "transform and re-structure the whole of American society," a move that would alienate many of his closest friends and further inflame his enemies. As King began to speak out against the war in Vietnam and refashion himself as the leader of a crusade for the poor and dispossessed in America, he was accused of abandoning his mission. "Citizen King" touches on issues important to the Nathan Cummings Foundation's objective of supporting work that concerns social and economic justice, especially for the poor. Camera News is requesting finishing funds for post-production of the film. They will sponsor screenings in eight cities around the country before and after the broadcast; and they will engage community groups in a discussion of King's legacy and his work concerning social and economic justice.
