Acts of Reclamation: Artists and Communities in Partnership

Presidential Authority Grant To support "Acts of Reclamation: Artists and Communities in Partnership," an undergraduate program that links issues of restoration, innovation and reclamation as articulated by four neighboring communities. The Reciprocal University for the Arts Project (RUAP) is a shared project of California State University at Monterey Bay's Visual and Public Art Institute and the Music and Performing Arts Institute. RUAP supports the development of relationships between the university and four communities. RUAP's core objectives are to enhance accessibility to and awareness of the arts, to increase community partners' organizational capacity, to develop a community-based university arts curriculum and to practice cultural citizenship. Since 1999, RUAP has established a university and community relationship predicated on collaboratively developing and implementing visual and performing arts projects that recognize community assets and address local issues. In the coming year RUAP will achieve the following: engaging teen moms, university students and faculty in an oral history project that will be the basis for the collection of multi-generational digital life stories; identifying and/or creating visual images that can be incorporated into I-Movies; engaging members of the local Boys and Girls Clubs and the YMCA in training programs involving the preservation of indigenous music; and introducing the communities to tradition bearers, artists and specialists who can train and assist in the implementation of the programs. RUAP will refine its curriculum based on its learnings from these initiatives.
