GIA 2003 Conference: The Edge

Presidential Authority Grant To support the Grantmakers in the Arts national conference "The Edge," in Seattle, Washington. The conference theme is inspired by Seattle's location on the edge of the continent, by today's changing economic climate and by the organization's continuing dialogue concerning foundations and the arts community working across cultures and sectors. This conference will explore and embrace the many lines and edges arts grantmakers navigate today by addressing the following themes; the Edge Between Cultures, Sectors, the New Economy, the New Philanthropy and Technology as well as Arts on the Edge. Sessions and Workshops that address issues that this foundation is concerned with include: The Growth and Emergence of the Hip Hop Community, an Abundance workshop featuring Marty Pottinger, Marc Meringoff discussing cultural indicators, Cultural Initiatives from Silicon Valley describing the power of culture to unify immigrant populations, as well as several sessions addressing cultural funding in communities of color in the new economy. These programs represent the implementation of a strategic plan that affirms the organization's commitment to the promotion of understanding across cultures and the empowerment of communities in need.
