To support the Effects of Stain Therapy on Oxidative Stress and Inflammation as Measured in Blood and Carotid Plaque project, a double-blind randomized clinical trail involving 24 patients with asymptomatic carotid artery disease undergoing elective carotid endarterectomy. This project will investigate the effects of systemic vs. non-systemic lipid-lowering therapies on intracellular redox state and proinflammatory cytokine gene activation in carotid endarterectomy specimens and determine whether or not oxidized lipids and LPS-stimulated proinflammatory cytokine production in whole blood is paralleled by gene activations of anti-oxidative enzymes and proinflammatory cytokines in carotid specimens.
