Taking On Corporate Agriculture

Program Contribution
Environment Program, $225,000
Interprogram Initiatives for Social and Economic Justice, $25,000

To support Taking on Corporate Agriculture, a project that will provide legal support to family farmers and the organizations that represent them. Farmers' Legal Action Group (FLAG) will continue to work with partner organizations including NCF grantees Land Stewardship Project and Western Organization of Resource Councils (WORC) to empower family farm organizations in rural America to challenge the abuses of increasingly powerful corporate agriculture. The project will continue FLAG's successful work to eliminate government mandated fees paid by family farmers to finance programs that work to the exclusive benefit of corporations. It will seek legal relief for family farmers from unfair production contracts. It will use legal tactics to maintain farmers' freedom to make their own choices about use of genetically modified seed and crops. It will assist client groups to address the problems caused by corporate ownership of livestock and to enforce laws prohibiting unfair practices by meat packers. And it will seek enforcement of environmental laws that apply to factory livestock production.
