Environment Program, $150,000
Interprogram Initiatives for Social and Economic Justice, $50,000

For general support of the Public Health Institute (PHI) as it works in partnership with District 11 of the United Steel Workers of America (USWA) to develop a base of support for environmentalism within the labor movement. The partnership will focus on educating 40,000 rank and file members in District 11's 13 states about the correlation between good jobs and environmentally sustainable economic development. It will also educate grassroots environmental activists about labor issues with the goal of advancing joint policy efforts on issues that will include energy, trade and healthcare. In order to build a prototype "green" union that leads the way within the labor movement as a whole, the partners will work to: 1) expand the educational activities – including trainings, workshops and the production and dissemination of educational materials – of the Public Health Institute within District 11; 2) provide support for regional and national labor-environmental alliances; 3) coordinate labor-environment public education in key states; and 4) organize a public presence for the next round of "Free Trade Area of the Americas" talks to hold negotiators accountable on labor, health and environmental issues.
