Environmental Defense Public Education Campaign

To support the Environmental Defense Public Education Campaign, a public education initiative that will involve diverse constituencies, such as public health officials, businesses, and social justice and people of color organizations, in the campaign to bring environmental issues to the forefront of public debate. Established as Environmental Strategies in 1994 by nine foundations, including NCF, the National Environmental Trust (NET) mounts national public education campaigns through the use of sophisticated communications and grassroots organizing tools. NET employs these techniques to inform the public, mobilize citizen groups, make the environment a salient issue for more citizens, gain the attention of policymakers, and win decisive action for a cleaner and healthier environment. The campaign will have three strategic objectives: 1) generating the political will to block continuing major attacks on environmental protections; 2) putting anti-environmental forces consistently on the defensive with regard to the public policy; and 3) engaging larger numbers of Americans in environmental protection efforts by using media coverage of the 2004 elections to shine a spotlight on these issues.
