Pharmaceutical Industry Accountability Campaign

Program Contribution
Health Program, $225,000
Interprogram Initiatives for Social and Economic Justice, $100,000

To support the Pharmaceutical Industry Accountability Campaign to provide training to community activists and leaders, to educate the public about the need for greater accountability of the pharmaceutical industry, and to promote health care for all Americans. A primary focus of the project will be to increase the capacity of statewide advocacy organizations to frame the public debate on the impact of the high cost of prescription drugs on health and well being. One way in which the project will do this is by implementing an internship program for the summer of 2004. The internship program will advance the project's goal in three ways. It will make additional staff available to selected state-based organizations for a two-month period. It will provide training and experience in supervision and project management to a mid-level staff member in the organizations in which interns are placed. It will offer 30 college-aged young people, especially young people who are of color or bilingual, the opportunity to explore organizing for social and economic justice as a career.
