To support the Coalition on the Environment in Jewish Life (COEJL) to further develop and disseminate a comprehensive Jewish response to environmental injustice and degradation in order to promote both an environmentally just and sustainable society and an ecologically responsive Jewish culture and community. The specific outcomes sought in 2003 include: action by the U.S. government and U.S. corporations to address global warming through increasing fuel economy of all vehicles and reducing emissions of carbon dioxide from power plants; U.S. participation in international treaties to protect the global environment; recruitment of 250 rabbis to a COEJL rabbinic network that will advocate environmental sustainability inside and outside the Jewish community; and involvement of 30 congregations in substantial environmental education, action and advocacy efforts. Strategies used toward this goal include: congregational outreach, rabbinic network development, leadership development, grassroots organizing, formal and informal education, intellectual and spiritual resource development, policy-maker education, media outreach, and partnerships with both Jewish and environmental organizations.
