Interprogram Essay
Interprogram Synergy can result when two or more of our program areas intersect; the arts bring a new dimension to environmentalism, healing and health care have a different cast when seen through the lens of Jewish tradition and spirituality. Moreover, two of our programs naturally intersect: a damaged environment results in damaged human health. Inter-Program grants allow us to take advantage of the possibilities inherent in combining program areas, and allow us to explore projects in often unusual or creative ways. As a common theme, many of these projects further the Foundation's interest in empowering people to solve the problems which affect them. A sample of our grantees is described below. FARMWORKER JUSTICE FUND For the Farmworker Occupational Safety and Health Institute, a joint effort of a public interest law firm, Farmworker Justice Fund; a farmworker organization, Comite de Apoyo a los Trabajardores Agricolas (CATA); and George Washington University Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Targeting New Jersey, Florida, and Puerto Rico over the next three years, the Institute will train farmworkers to identify health and safety problems on the job and help them develop ways to protect themselves. It will train health care providers to recognize and treat farm-related injuries and illness and to provide preventive education and advocate for farmworkers on health and safety issues; and monitor the implementation and enforcement of federal and state laws and regulations created to protect farmworkers" health and safety. Finally, it will develop strategies in conjunction with farmworker organizations and migrant health clinics to address violations and to promote employer compliance with existing laws. |
