Our staff brings to its work a broad range of associations in the non-profit world, as both grantors and grantees. Charles R. Halpern, the Foundation's president, is a pioneer of the public interest law movement and the founding dean of the City University of New York Law School. Andrea Kydd, who heads the Foundation's health program, was director of the Youth Project in Washington, DC, and a senior executive at VISTA. She is a board member of Grantmakers in Health. Conn Nugent, who heads the environment program, was coordinator of the Five Colleges consortium in Amherst, Massachusetts, and executive director of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War when it won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. He is a board member of the Environmental Grantmakers Association. The director of the Jewish life program, Rachel Cowan, is an ordained rabbi, an innovator in Jewish institutions, the co-author of Mixed Blessings, a book on intermarriage, and a board member of the Jewish Funders Network. The director of the arts program, Joan Shigekawa, was an executive producer for public television, and a former coordinating producer of the Production Laboratory for the Program for Art on Film a joint venture of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Trust. She is a board member of Grantmakers in the Arts. The director of special projects, Jennifer McCarthy, managed training programs for black South African community leaders and directed the office of program development at the Institute of International Education.Ellen Lazarus, the Foundation's chief financial officer, is both a Chartered Financial Analyst and a C.P.A. who combines extensive experience in the for-profit world with a commitment to the Foundation's mission. We express our thanks to Kathryn Roth, who served as director of special projects in 1992. She left the Foundation to join the White House staff.
