Focus Area: Racial and Economic Justice
The Vera Institute of Justice envisions a society that respects the dignity of every person and safeguards justice for everyone. Vera Institute works to tackle the most pressing injustices of our society today – from the causes of mass incarceration, racial disparities, and the loss of public trust in law enforcement, to the unmet needs of the vulnerable, the marginalized, and those harmed by crime and violence. Using a systemic lens, Vera Institute is committed to tackling the core issues of poverty and race. Furthermore, its innovative and action-oriented research coupled with its track record in advocacy aims to uncover implicit bias while shifting the hearts and minds of even the most entrenched resistors.
With support from The Nathan Cummings Foundation, Vera Institute is building on its national efforts to address mass incarceration and the fees and fines that lead to a loss of income for low-income households. Vera will also collect the evidence needed to reform outdated and unjust policies and practices. In partnership with the Foundation’s staff, Vera Institute will also develop a series of learning activities for philanthropy, including convening stakeholders, draft white papers on these topics and disseminate findings to a wide audience.
